Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge

On 17 March an exciting new competition ‘Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge’ will be launched which will see Year 10 students on the Gold Coast going head to head in the kitchen.

Gold Coast TAFE Acting Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Devine said the Institute was honoured to be invited to participate in the steering committee for the Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge.

“The new competition is supported by The Smith Family who is a facilitating partner in the Australian Government’s School Business Community Partnership Brokers program.

“And was borne from the goal to further strengthen the success of the ‘2010 Essential Ingredients – Chefs on Show’ program and the desire to build sustainability for the hospitality industry.

“The competition has the support and sponsorship of The Australian Culinary Federation, Diabetes Australia, The Nutrition Foundation, The Marriott, Gold Coast Show Society and the hospitality industry,” he said.

President of the Australian Culinary Federation Queensland, Bruno Gentile said the concept  of this year’s competition is similar to the Australian Culinary Federation National and International Programs for Year 11 and 12 students with the exception it targets year 10 students.

“The competition will be used as a platform for students to gain a taste of the hospitality industry and competition.

“The promotion of nutrition, balanced dishes and fresh produce will be a key element to the criteria for school students to enter the competition.

“There will be a series of finals which will be held in the Gold Coast TAFE training kitchens culminating in a grand final at the Gold Coast Show on 4 September 2011.

“We are calling for interested local Gold Coast schools to nominate two representatives to participate in the 2011 Challenge.

“Once the schools have determined their teams an invitation for all participating students to have a ‘master class’ with Gold Coast Institute of TAFE chefs will be extended.

“In addition, we have invited the Merrimac High School winners of the 2010 competition to the launch to speak about the benefits of entering the competition,” Mr Gentile said.

The launch of the Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge will be held in the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE Bistro at …………………………
